Easter Sunday

Happy Easter everyone!
This past week I had the honor of serving as the preacher for two funerals. The funerals were of two hospice patients that I had ministered to as Chaplain. The funerals were fairly routine, but there was something about doing a funeral on this week, the Passion Week.  Knowing that Christ died for our sins and saved us from Hell is the most precious gift. During all of this "chaos" I had a thought.

Jesus had been to a wedding. He had been summoned to the bedside of those that were ill unto death, and gave life back to the body. Funerals were not common to Jesus. But most interesting is that Jesus never had a funeral.

Jesus had a trial. Jesus had an execution. Jesus even had a burial, but no where does the Bible mention a funeral. No songs sung, no flowers at the grave. Why is that? Ypu can't have a funeral for someone who is alive. Jesus was not dead. Why a borrowed tomb? He only needed it for a couple of days. Jesus did not need eloquent words spoken over his memory. He was the Word made flesh and besides he was only out on business. Jesus would change the fabric of the world, he had an appointment with our eternity.

Make no mistake, Jesus was not buried alive. No, he was dead as a doornail. Jesus had to be so that the devil would know where to hang the keys of death, Hell and the grave. Jesus may never have had a funeral, but he did face a most horrific death.  A death that set right the relationship with us and God.It is now up to us as to how we treat that relationship.

Jesus never had a funeral, but he died to rise again for us if we will follow him.
